Helicopter charter safety: what to check before you fly

A certificate is the floor. These are the things that actually distinguish operators, and the questions that get you a useful answer.

We are not a safety authority. This page is a guide to asking better questions. It is not an assessment of any operator, and nothing on this site should be read as certifying that a flight is safe. The certificate holder is responsible for the conduct of your flight.

Start with the certificate, then stop treating it as the answer

Confirming an operator holds a current Part 135 certificate rules out the worst outcome — illegal charter, where nobody has been holding the operation to commercial standards and the insurance position is very likely worthless. That is a real and recurring problem, and it is worth two minutes to exclude.

But every certificated operator has cleared the same bar, so the certificate cannot tell them apart. Everything below is about what varies afterwards.

Third-party audits: what the ratings mean

Two commercial audit programmes are widely recognised in this market, and a third international standard sits alongside them.

  • ARGUS rates operators through tiers — Gold, Gold Plus and Platinum — with the higher tiers requiring an on-site audit rather than a records review.
  • Wyvern operates a registered/recommended structure, with its Wingman standard requiring an on-site audit and ongoing conformance.
  • IS-BAO is an international safety management standard with progressive stages, focused on whether a safety management system is genuinely embedded rather than merely documented.

These cost money and take time, which is the useful signal: an operator who has paid for a recurring on-site audit has chosen to be inspected by someone with no commercial reason to be kind. The corollary is that absence is weak evidence — many good small operators have never bought an audit because their clients never asked. Treat a rating as a positive signal, not its absence as a negative one.

Verify claims with the programme, not the brochure. All three maintain their own registries.

Single engine or twin, and why it is not simply "twin is safer"

Most of the US charter helicopter fleet is single-engine turbine, and those aircraft have an excellent record in the work they are designed for. The real question is what happens in the event of an engine failure over the specific ground you will be flying across. Over open terrain, an experienced pilot in a single has a well-practised autorotation and a place to put it. Over dense city, water at night, or mountainous terrain in poor visibility, the options narrow considerably.

Twin-engine aircraft cost meaningfully more per hour. If your route is over-water, over-city, or at night, that is where the money buys something concrete rather than comfort. Ask the operator what they would fly for your specific route and why — a good one will have a view and will explain it.

IFR capability buys reliability as much as safety

Many light charter helicopters are certified for visual flight only. That does not make them unsafe; it makes them weather-limited. In practice this shows up as cancellation rather than risk, because a professional crew will not launch into conditions the aircraft is not equipped for. Where it becomes a safety question is when commercial pressure meets marginal weather, which is the situation every credible safety programme in aviation is designed to defuse.

If you need the trip to happen regardless of a low ceiling, you need an IFR-capable aircraft and a crew current for it. Ask directly, and ask what the plan is if the weather goes down.

Questions worth asking, and what a good answer sounds like

  1. Who holds the certificate for this flight, and what is the designator? A direct answer, immediately. Hesitation here is the most informative response on this list.
  2. Is the aircraft on your certificate, or are you sub-chartering? Sub-chartering is normal and legitimate. Not disclosing it is not.
  3. What are the pilot's hours on this type, and their recent experience on this kind of route? Total hours matter less than currency on the aircraft and familiarity with the terrain and the pads.
  4. Single pilot or two crew? Reasonable answers exist either way; you want to know which and why.
  5. What are your weather minimums, and who makes the go/no-go call? The best answer names the pilot in command and describes a process that insulates them from commercial pressure.
  6. Do you hold a current third-party audit rating? If yes, check it with the programme.
  7. Can I see a certificate of insurance? Look at the limits and at whether passenger liability is covered, not just that a document exists.
  8. What is the plan if the weather goes down or the aircraft is unserviceable? A rehearsed answer means they have been here before.

Passenger-side things that actually matter

  • Give accurate weights. Not the ones you would like to be true. Performance planning uses them and the margins are real.
  • Take the safety briefing seriously. Rotor-strike and tail-rotor awareness on the ground are among the more common ways people get hurt around helicopters, and the briefing is short.
  • Never approach or leave the aircraft unescorted. Always within the crew's sight, always in the direction they indicate, never toward the tail.
  • Say if you have a medical condition, mobility limitation or are pregnant. It changes seating and sometimes the aircraft.
  • Accept a cancellation gracefully. An operator who cancels in marginal weather is demonstrating exactly the culture you want. Pressuring a crew to fly is the one thing a passenger can do that genuinely makes a flight more dangerous.
