Helicopter charter in Nice and the Côte d’Azur
The Côte d’Azur is the most helicopter-dependent stretch of coast in Europe, and the reason is a single road that stops working every summer.
Nice Côte d’Azur is the anchor. It is the third-busiest airport in France, it has a helicopter facility alongside the fixed-wing terminals, and it is where most visitors to this coast arrive. From there the geography does the rest: Monaco is about twenty minutes by road on a good day and considerably more on a bad one, Cannes is west along the same congested coastal corridor, and Saint-Tropez in August is a byword for a drive that should not take three hours and does.
The Nice–Monaco shuttle is the flagship. It is a short hop of roughly seven minutes, flown frequently in season, and it is the closest thing in Europe to a scheduled helicopter service — which makes it unusual, because most of what this site deals with is on-demand charter. The distinction matters when you book: a seat on a shuttle and a private charter of the whole aircraft are different products at very different prices, and both are sold on this coast.
Beyond Monaco, the standard runs are Nice to Cannes, to Saint-Tropez, to Portofino and the Italian Riviera, and out to yachts and villas along the coast. Yacht work is a real specialism here — landing on a vessel is not something every operator or every aircraft is qualified for, and it is the one request where the answer "we can probably arrange that" should prompt more questions rather than fewer.
Seasonality is extreme. From May to September the coast runs at capacity, aircraft are committed weeks ahead around the Cannes Film Festival, the Monaco Grand Prix and the August peak, and prices reflect it. In February the same flight is cheap and instantly available. If your dates are flexible by even a few days in shoulder season, say so when you ask — it is often the single biggest lever on the price.
Two practical notes. First, Monaco: our landing-site import holds no records for Monaco itself, so nothing on this page is claiming to list its heliport from our own data — the shuttle is a well-known service, and we would rather say where our data stops than pad the table. Second, noise: this coast has active local pressure on helicopter traffic, and routes, hours and frequencies are managed accordingly, which is why departures are windowed and why your pilot flies the line they are given rather than the shortest one.
Landing on the Riviera is more structured than the glamour suggests. Flights work into Nice, Cannes-Mandelieu, La Môle near Saint-Tropez and declared helicopter sites; villa and hotel landings are permission-based, and in France that permission is a real administrative step rather than a phone call. Ask early who is obtaining it. In peak weeks the constraint on your trip is far more likely to be a landing permission or a slot than the availability of a helicopter.
What people actually fly here
- Monaco shuttle. The seven-minute hop from Nice — as a seat, or as a private charter.
- Cannes and Saint-Tropez. The transfers that exist because the coast road stops working in summer.
- Yacht landings. Ship-deck work, which needs a qualified operator and aircraft.
- Italian Riviera. Cross-border runs to Portofino and the Ligurian coast.
Landing sites on record
Straight from the OurAirports dataset we import, unedited. Being on this list means the site exists, not that you can land on it — most are private, hospital or public-safety pads, and use depends on the site owner's permission and the operator's authorisation.
